Overflow Box Set Setup Instructions
Assembly of the Amiracle Overflow Box Sets: (pictures are coming
soon!)
The
overflow sets come with 2 different setup options – straight or
elbow PVC pieces.
1.
Most will use the straight PVC pieces & only 2 rubber O rings. The
PVC elbow is used when flow needs to run horizontally through a wall
behind the tank etc. Save these spare parts…just in case down
the road you want to use them for something else. ;)
2.
Put
a rubber O ring on the male PVC adaptor (outer threads) & insert it
inside the box through the hole.
3.
Put
a second O ring on the male adaptor from the outside of the box.
4.
Screw on the female (inside threads) adaptor & tighten firm but not
hard. You don’t want to squat out the O ring which would make it
leak.
5.
Insert the Ribbed hose into the female adaptor – tighten as hard as
you can. You can use PVC cement here – I recommend cementing them.
Eliminates the potential for leaks & salt creep. Another
option is to use PVC from the overflow box set all the way to the
sump. This would eliminate the use of the ribbed hose option.
Either way, get the dump down into your sump tub/container as far
away from your main pump as you can. Once the system is
started, be sure your pump doesn't suck up any bubbles produced by
the dumping action of the overflow in the sump. More on
"bubble diffusers" later. :0)
6.
Hang the big box set on the tank rim (normally on the back side of
the tank & the opposite end of your return (pump) piping).
Take the 2 nylon wing nuts & slide each into the slots inside the
tank. The best way is to put the “bolt head” behind & the “bolt
end” facing tank front. Notice both the hanging box set & toothed
prefilter box have open “slots” which allow for raising or lowering
the height of the prefilter box inside the tank (nice feature many
other MFG units don't have). The height of the prefilter box
determines the water height/level inside your tank. Start with
placing the bolts mid slot on both pieces & tighten bolts.
7.
Prime the box set. Your tank should be full of water and at a
height you want it to operate at. The sump should have a
couple inches of extra water over what you want it to run at
(normally a couple inches over the main pump). Adjust the
prefilter box so it fills with water to the "bottom" of the
"teeth'. To prime you must fill the back side with tank water where
the U tube sits (side with no drain hole).
Starting the Overflow Siphon &
System: NOTE:
Your pump needs to be plumbed,
tank & sump filled with water before starting the overflow siphon.
Be prepared to turn off the pump quickly if your first attempts to
start the siphon are not successful. The pump will continue to
fill your tank with water as the only way out is the overflow!
1.
With one hand, hold the U tube...with the other hand slide a 3 ft
piece of airline tubing into the U tube until it just goes over the
top curve.
2.
Set
the U tube in place into the box set making sure the airline stays
in place & both ends of the U tube stay submersed under water.
Holding the U tube in place suck on the end of the airline to remove
the air from the U tube. You will see the water fill the U tube.
Draw out the airline while continuing to suck the remaining air &
until the water starts to flow freely through the U tube.
3.
After a minute or two of running watch the “toothed” prefilter box –
the water should drop into the box about an inch to 2 inches below
the teeth). To slow or quicken the flow just turn the ball valve
you’ve installed on the pump line (return) into the tank. Make
slight adjustments & wait a few moments to see what effect it has.
NOTE:
The only time I've EVER seen an overflow fail
is when the pump was pushing water into the tank faster than the
overflow could send it out. More commonly seen is that the
pump isn't pushing enough water into the tank to keep bubbles from
collecting at the top of the U tube. If the water is dropping
into the prefilter (toothed) box as prescribed above you should
NEVER have a problem. Remember, the overflow unit only runs as
fast as the pump is pushing water into your tank!
