One of the most popular & beloved fish groups... being colorful, personable & fun. In the right environment these fish can live 25 - 30 years in our tanks - certainly to become your pets! Tangs are very easy to keep though some like the beloved Hippo Tang have an undeserved reputation for being "Ick Magnets". This is not so. Any fish - Tangs included, battle Ick infestations with their immune systems. Let a fish be stressed for any reason like shipping, poor diet, poor water quality, bully tankmates etc. & their immune systems will decrease making them more susceptible to Ick. Add to that a fish's individual "personality" - example: Hippo Tangs tend to be naturally more shy which causes their immune system to lower more quickly than other more laid back Tangs. This does NOT make them more difficult to keep. We just need to be more diligent to any stress factors...which would also affect all other fish in the tank. There are still those who would tell you that you cannot have more than one Tang in the same tank. This is FALSE. Unless you have a tank 300 gallons+ you probably won't keep more than a single specimen of any one Tang in a single tank but we can certainly house more than one of different species as is proven in the picture above. The trick is to know which ones to put in first based on their species personalities. Beware though as every individual fish has their very own personality so understand that though I provide "general" expectations for a given Tang species, at time we find a particular individual can act differently. There are ways to intervene & make them accept one another so don't give up! Contact me for more information &/or help if needed. :0) All Tangs are herbivores, first & foremost. Offer them Nori Seaweed once a day as a staple food along with flake & frozen foods. |
