Water
Changes - Why/ How Much & How To Prepare
Why/ How Much: There are many contaminants
that can only be removed from our tanks by means of water
changes. Also, corals & other tank
inhabitants utilize important trace elements during the
week. The best way to replace them is to
perform 10%
weekly water changes
using a high quality salt brand like Tropic
Marin. Don’t be fooled. Not all salts
are the same! The biggest differences between salts
are
batch consistency, contaminants and
the number and levels of essential trace elements contained
in each. Tropic Marin
Pro Reef & Bio Actif are the most complete
salt for trace elements as well as not containing
Phosphates, NitrAtes etc. I've used about every brand
salt out there & nothing produces the health & growth that
these salts do. 10% water changes physically
remove wastes not captured by the skimmer. Larger or
less frequent changes many times results in stress for the
tank inhabitants. Be kind to your reef! Give
your livestock a breath of fresh air by performing
10% weekly water changes using Tropic Marin salts.
How To Prepare:
Mixing New
Saltwater for
Water Changes:
A mistake some hobbyists make is to immediately use freshly
mixed salt & water to do their changes. Saltwater
should NOT be used a minimum of 24 hours after mixing, 48
hours is better, a week is better yet!
Newly mixed
saltwater give off gasses harmful to livestock. Also,
though the salt may “look” completely dissolved you can be
sure there are still undissolved salt crystals which can
burn & even kill livestock, corals & fish alike!! I
recommend mixing up a new batch of change water immediately
after doing a water change. Use a small powerhead to
keep it stirring. This allows it to thoroughly “age”
for the next 6 days making it completely safe for your next
change.
A final note. Be warned!
Some people think they can get away with fewer water
changes. If you don't perform 10% weekly water changes,
it's not a matter of IF you'll have problems with nuisance
algae etc., it's just a matter of when.
