Summertime - Controlling Water Temps
Summer
can be a killer for our tanks & its inhabitants. Hot
days can make tank temperatures rise dramatically,
especially given our hot lighting systems!
As the temperature increases in
our tanks, the oxygen levels decrease & livestock start to
suffocate. Normally we run at 78 degrees but temps over 83 degrees...we need to intervene! If we don't, microorganisms
start to die & then our fish & corals! Here are a few
tips to help control the heat:
-
Turn your
lights off during the day - you can run them a few hours
at night when it's cooler
-
Run fans
directly at the tank, especially at the top water
surface. For those who may use clip-on fans be
careful NOT to let them fall into your tank! BE
safe!
-
Open your
stand door to allow heat to escape
-
Make sure
your heater is working properly & not staying on!
Glass heaters are notorious for thermostat failures!
-
Room air
conditioners and chiller units work great. Air
conditioners are less expensive and also cool us &
dehumidify our homes whereas chillers only help the
tank.
-
If all else
fails we can fill clean 2 liter bottles, milk jugs etc.
with ice water, cap & place in our sump.
Bottom line is
we need to try & keep our tanks below 80 degrees. It's
better for a tank to be cooler than warmer! |
