Summertime - Reef Sitters
This is the time of year when many of you go on vacations.
Be it a couple of days to get away or a couple weeks out of
town. I know this because I receive more phone calls &
e-mail from worried reef owners looking for advice because
they anticipate disaster while away! Not to worry!
A fully automated reef system can handle a few days to a
week without assistance (auto evaporation replacement &
lights on timers). Even the fish can go a couple of
days without feeding. If you're not automated then
you'll need to consider having a trusted friend or relative
come in for the basics....feeding & evaporation replacement.
I've heard
numerous stories about how a reefer was gone & their chosen
tank attendee managed to kill everything in the tank!
How can that be?! It's usually caused by one of 2
things:
1. They overfed the tank
2. They contaminated the tank by having hand
lotion, perfumes etc. on their hands.
There are a couple
of things YOU can do to help avoid disaster:
a. Leave clearly written instructions just as you
would for a babysitter watching your child
b. If possible, have your attendee come in before
you leave so you can "show" them how to administer to your
tank.
c. Make up sandwich bags containing only the
amount of food to be fed each day.
d. Have the attendee use a turkey baster to
administer the foods. Just add a squirt of tank water
to the bag then suck up with the baster & use the baster to
apply the food to the tank. This eliminates the need
for any hands in the water.
