Summertime - Water Changes
Summer
is the time of year when many reef tanks gets
neglected. With vacations, trips to camp & to the
beach, lawns to mow & gardens to tend many people find
themselves with less time for water changes....many times
with disastrous results!
Our corals look
happy as well as our fish so what's the big deal if we don't
do water changes for a few weeks? Well, in this case,
what we "can't see" can hurt us/our tanks.
Lots of different contaminants, heavy metals etc. but
especially DOCs
(dissolved organic compounds) which we can't see with the
naked eye are continuously increasing in our systems until
we do water changes that physically remove them. If
allowed to build up those DOCs levels reach a point where
they become food/fertilizer for nuisance algae &
cyanobacteria (Red Slime)! Bear in mind that it takes
much more effort to eradicate a tank of these scourges than
it does to stay on top of routine tank maintenance.
If doing water
changes is a laborious task then you might want to consider
