RO Water
Filters
Good reefers
know we need to do 10% weekly water changes to replenish
necessary trace elements as well as physically remove
wastes. Did you know that if you’re not filtering your
tap water through an RO (reverse osmosis water filter) you
are no doubt adding new waste elements back into your tank!!
Elements such as phosphates, silicates (fertilizers!!) toxic
heavy metals…& more! Absolutely NO public water
sources are suitable for our reef aquariums straight out of
the tap.
I am all about saving people
money wherever I can in this hobby but this is one area we
absolutely cannot do without or skimp on! With almost
15 years of personal experience as well as supporting
hundreds of other hobbyists I've come to find that water is
the biggest common denominator for most tank problems.
Cheap faucet
carbon water filters just don’t cut it folks! Be
warned of manufacturer claims! You are given a false
sense of security using those. They exhaust quickly &
pull few nasties! Also,
not all RO units are the same.
The TFC membranes are physically different, i.e., the
quality of materials used to make it & how tightly wound the
membrane is. Given this, they pull different
components & amounts of which out of the water. RO
units found at Home Depot etc. are geared for water used by
humans. What is fine for us to drink is not
necessarily fine to use in our reef tanks! This also
goes for distilled or bottled RO water in grocery stores
etc. Be safe & invest in a Kent brand RO unit which is
the BEST for reef aquarium use.
If you
haven’t already invested in an RO water filter, do yourself
& your tank a favor and get one! I can't stress this
enough. You WILL deal with problems like nuisance
algae if you don't. If you’ve already made the wise
choice & are running one, be sure to change the prefilters
when indicated by color change or decrease in pure water
made. Remember, using an RO allows you to automate
your system for evaporation replacement & even saltwater mix
containers. How To info. & examples are found on this
web site here:
