Quarantine Tanks
Purchasing new
fish for our tanks is always lots of fun. These new
additions quickly become beloved pets. The money we
invest in purchasing them may not seem like much, but if it
dies, it just became money down the tubes. Now, if
that same fish introduces a virus or pathogen, infects &
kills your existing fish pets....Oh The Cost & Heartache!
As much as the most ethical store
would not knowingly sell a sick fish there are times when a problem is not
apparent & without the fish telling us something is wrong...or perhaps by virtue
of a crystal ball, there's no way to know the fish isn't feeling well.
Many times even the most gentle of collection at the store, transport &
introduction to a new home (your tank) may be just enough stress to lower it's
immune system allowing it to fall prey to any number of possible problems.
Besides purchasing at a reputable
store, quarantine tanks are your first line of defense. An inexpensive
system can save you lots of money & heartache. They take up very little
room, inexpensive to operate, allow the fish to rest in peace, allows you to
view & monitor it's health, to target feed it and to medicate if necessary.
The Q tank can be as simple as a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter & heater.
Set it up with water from your main tank. Water change water works well.
Newly purchased fish should be quarantined 2 weeks before being introduced to
your main tank. Remember, patience in this hobby is KEY! Resist the
temptation to place your new addition directly into your main tank!
If at all possible...Quarantine!!!
